The French Red-Volution
Not so long ago any debate about French red wine centered on Bordeaux vs. Burgundy. Today, the red wine map of France has many outposts of excellent, affordable wines from regions little known just twenty years ago. Plus, some other established regions like the Rhône and Loire have improved immensely.
Régnié
2020 Régnié ‘Vallières’ (Jean-Marc Burgaud)
Sale Price $17.99 – $183.50 case of twelve
While known for his superb Morgons, Jean-Marc Burgaud has long produced a limited-edition Régnié. Alas, his contract for the Gamay grapes from the Vallières vineyard has expired, and this 2020 will be the last vintage. It is going out with a big bang with its plummy fruit and spicy tannins.
L’Ardèche
2020 Coteaux de l’Ardèche ‘Petite Selve’ (Château de la Selve)
Sale Price $13.99 – $142.70 case of twelve
The rugged and beautiful Ardèche region makes just a little wine, but that of Château de la Selve deserves attention. Their goal is to produce naturally light wines with minimal intervention. The Petite Selve is a raspberry-fruited charmer based on Cinsault and Grenache. A bit of Syrah adds some structure and refinement. Fabulous with eggplant, tomato, and peppers.
Savoie Rouge
2020 Savoie Rouge (Viallet)
Sale Price $11.99 – $122.30 case of twelve
Viallet can do no wrong in our book. Their wines are balanced, flavorful, and affordable. The 2020 Savoie Rouge, a mix of Gamay and Mondeuse, has gripping earth and fruit qualities that will match with a seared salmon and spicy greens.
Syrah
2021 Pays d’Oc Syrah ‘Eve’ (Maison Ventenac)
Sale Price $12.99 – $132.50 case of twelve
Maison Ventenac is located in the Cabardès district in the western Languedoc, where the mild Atlantic climate meets the heat of the Mediterranean. This allows both Bordeaux and Rhône varieties to ripen. Our current favorite is their spicy Syrah. The 2021 Eve is a lively red with aromas of thyme and rosemary, fine berry fruit, and a ripe tannic finish.
Home Town Discount
2020 Cairanne ‘Les Travers’ (Domaine Brusset)
Sale Price $19.99 – $203.90 case of twelve
Domaine Brusset is famous for their big, brawny Gigondas, but from their hometown of Cairanne they make this equally impressive Les Travers from a terraced, garrigue-surrounded vineyard. This mix of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre is an amalgamation of Provençal rocks, herbs, and sunshine.
Birdsong Bourgueil
2017 Bourgueil ‘Cuvée Beauvais’ (Domaine de la Chanteleuserie)
Sale Price $19.99 – $203.90 case of twelve
We had no idea that we would see this special wine again, but the crazy musical note-spewing bird of Bourgueil is back. The 2017 Beauvais from Chanteleuserie is a clove-scented, deep, flavorful Cabernet Franc with many years of aging ahead.
Listed prices are honored through September 19th, 2022. We will not honor mistyped prices. Vol. 46, No. 9

Couly-Dutheil’s Chinon Rosé is a tart and juicy Cabernet Franc that pairs well with grilled chicken and a green bean salad.
2021 Ventoux Rosé (Fondrèche)
Sale Price $19.99 – $203.90 case of twelve
The 2021 Fondrèche delivers ripe, round, peachy fruit and a cool, dry finish. Fantastic with a full pot of summer market ratatouille.
2021 Costières de Nîmes Rosé ‘Galets Rosés’ (Mourgues du Grès)
Sale Price $12.99 – $132.50 case of twelve
Mourgues du Grès is one of our favorite ‘darker’ rosés. With its peppery spice and rich, plummy fruit, it drinks like a lighter red. Great with spicy lamb sausages and couscous.
2021 Les Baux de Provence Rosé (Mas de Gourgonnier)
Sale Price $19.99 – $203.90 case of twelve
Mas de Gourgonnier is a pioneer in organic winemaking in southern France. Their rosé always gushes with Provençal flavors. The 2021 is deep and dry with scents and flavors of herbs and cherries. Have this with a classic tuna niçoise salad.
Falanghina
2021 Irpinia Falanghina ‘Corte di Giso’ (Terredora Di Paolo)
Sale Price $17.99 – $183.50 case of twelve
Falanghina, one of our favorite Italian whites, is ideal for the Mediterranean foods of summer. The 2021 single vineyard Corte di Giso from Terredora Di Paolo has an intense citrus blossom aroma, apricot fruit, and a ripe, round finish. This fragrant and dry Campanian beauty is an ideal match with grilled swordfish and sautéed Roma beans alongside a caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella.
Frappato
2021 Terre Siciliane Frappato 'Rina Russa' (Santa Tresa)
Sale Price $14.99 – $152.90 case of twelve
Santa Tresa’s organic Frappato is grown in the red sand (rina russa) of Sicily’s Vittoria district. This gorgeously colored light red has aromas of strawberry and cherry along with a lightly tannic finish. The Santa Tresa website suggests serving this at room temperature with cured meats and cheeses, or chilling it slightly to pair with fish. Either way (or both), this is a terrific summer red.
Speziale
2021 Verduno Pelaverga 'Speziale' (Fratelli Alessandria)
Sale Price $23.99 – $244.70 case of twelve
Growers in the Piedmontese village of Verduno have been the principal force in rescuing the Pelaverga Piccolo grape from obscurity. Fratelli Alessandria names their version Speziale to highlight its spicy and peppery aromas. There’s also finely balanced cherry fruit to go along with the spice in this pale, light-bodied red. Alessandria’s latest vintage will be a nice match with grilled salmon and a mango salsa.
Dr. Heyden: Then and Now
1992 Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling Eiswein
(Dr. Heyden)
Sale Price $64.99 per 375ml
Last March Frank Heyden was in the States for a tour and tasting with some other German producers. After his usual stellar lineup of Silvaner, Pinot Noir, and various Rieslings he poured us this Eiswein. At first we didn’t think that it was available for sale, but there actually were a few cases back at the winery. Its recent arrival prompted us to e-mail Frank for details. The wine was made by his uncle. On a late November evening in 1992 the temperature in the Sackträger vineyard dropped to -9°C. A very young Frank, his father, uncle, and one other worker picked the frozen grapes berry by berry just before sunrise. The sugar at harvest was amazingly high and matched by ample acidity. This wine is in superb condition, having been stored at the winery this entire time and re-corked in 2021. At soon to be 30 years of age, the nose is dense with sweet orchard fruits and then it literally fills your mouth with flavor. A thrilling wine plus an amazing family history. Many thanks to the team that made this rare treat.
2020 Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling Trocken ‘GG’ (Dr. Heyden)
Sale Price $19.99 – $203.90 case of twelve
Fast forward more than a quarter century and we have another terrific Dr. Heyden Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling. This one is also amazingly concentrated, but totally dry. The peach and apricot fruit are fused to an intense limestone minerality. This 2020 is an amazing value from one of the best vineyards in the Rheinhessen. It will make a great pairing with crab cakes and a summer corn salad.
Specialty Foods
Inflation Reduction Cheese
Specialty foods have not been immune to the price increases of the last few years. These days it is not uncommon for the best artisan cheeses to break $30 per pound. While we wholeheartedly believe those cheeses are worth the price, there are still great values to be found at a lower price point for everyday enjoyment. Here are a few of our favorites that prove you can still get a delicious, high-quality cheese for $20 a pound.
